Become a Volunteer

Our Volunteers

The Stronghold Freedom Foundation has no paid staff, only dedicated volunteers that give their time and energy to build and run our programs.

Without volunteers we could not help K2 Veterans, it's that simple. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of the 15,777+ veterans, civilians, and federal employees that were stationed at K2 - and their families - please look at the opportunities below and fill out an application.

Care and Support Team

Our Care and Support Team (CaST) is one of our newest and most exciting initiatives. The CaST helps K2 Veterans and their families find the services they need. The amount of care a K2 Veteran or their familiy receives from the CaST depends on the complexity of their situation.

Care Managers - working directly with K2 Veterans, family members, and caretakers (our members); the Care Manager is the single point of contact between the member and SFF. The Care Manager works with internal and external stakeholders to help each individual member with their specific needs.

Spiritual Care Team - working within the CaST, the Spiritual Care Team provides spiritual and pastoral care for members from every denomination.

Counseling/Social Work - working within the CaST as advisors, our Social Work and Counseling team members give advice on how to handle situations when members are struggling with emotional issues.

Medical - working within the CaST as advisors, our medical team members give advice on how to handle situations when members are struggling with specific medical issues - we do not give medical advice, but with medical advisors on staff, we can point members in the right direction faster.

Veterans Service Officer/Claims Agent - is your one dream to get as many people their VA benefits as possible? Do you already have experience, or are interested in learning? We are shooting for VSO status next year and will need VSO's to handle cases. You will need to be willing to get the certification or work toward certification and maintain it.

Administration Team

There is always one group of unsung heroes in every organization. The paper pushers, the technology manager, and the finance wizards who make it all work. Without them, we would be lost. If your skills run toward administration, then we definitely need your help.

Accounting - If spreadsheets, invoices, receipts, and ledgers are your thing - and if you have experience with QuickBooks, then we can use your help.

Information Technology - If you know the Microsoft platform inside and out, have worked with multiple systems integrating together, understand how databases and CRM's work - then we definitely need you.

Human Services - The more volunteers that we have, the more we need one person to make sure that every "t" is crossed and every "i" is dotted. Each volunteer needs to have someone to make sure that they are valued - if you feel that too, then this is the place for you.

Training - In every organization, there is a training and onboarding component and we are no different. If you love to get new volunteers up to speed and doing their job as quickly as possible then we are in dire need of your help.

Outreach Team

If you love to talk to new people, if you believe that every K2 Veteran and their family needs to be sought out and informed of the situation - then Outreach is your team. These amazing volunteers do more than just moderate and monitor the Facebook groups, they are planning to start contacting each and every K2 Veteran that they can find, anyway they can.

Facebook Moderator - Vetting members of each of the Facebook groups, answering questions, and getting K2 Veterans and their families who need assistance referred to the CaST.

Regional Leaders - We are splitting the country into four regions; Northeast (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV), South (KY, NC, TN, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, AR, LA, OK, TX, NM), Midwest (OH, MI, IN, IL WI, MN, IA, MO, NE, KS), and West (ND, SD, MT, WY, CO, ID, UT, AZ, WA, OR, NV, CA, AK, HI). Each region needs several Regional Outreach Leaders to help coordinate events and communication with the K2 Veterans and families in their region.

Strategic Planning Team

Our Strategic Planning Team spearheads our efforts to grow the organization. If you are a forward thinker who loves to explore "what if" - this is the team for you.

Fundraising Coordinator - One of the most important jobs in any nonprofit organization, the fundraising team helps us raise every dollar that we use for our cause. To do this they must research our needs, find donors, and find new ways to solicit funds. You need to understand how social media and online fundraising have changed the art of fundraising over the years and be able to shift as new ways of fundraising become available.

Sponsorship Coordinator - Working with our fundraisers, the Sponsorship Coordinator looks for large donors who are willing to sponsor a program on a yearly basis. If you can develop relationships with corporations and can really sell SFF to potential sponsors this is the position for you.

Special Projects - We will always have a special project or two in the pipeline - whether it be a trip to DC for an appearance or a reunion, we are going to need to raise funds just for that event and plan and coordinate every aspect of it. If you are a detailed person, who loves to plan - this is the spot for you.

Merchandise - If you walk down the street and think - "Wow, it would be great to have SFF on that _____ (fill in the blank with a type of hat, shirt, or anything else" then merchandising is right up your alley. We don't put our logo on just anything - and it's important to pick the right products to put our brand out there.

Communications and Marketing Team

Our Communications and Marketing Team (MarComms) has one of the hardest jobs in our organization. They are tasked with understanding their audience, creating relevant and compelling messaging those people find valuable, and delivering that messaging through a variety of channels.

MarComms isn't just getting the word out in the press, in fact, somedays that may seem like the easiest part of the job. We need people who are interested in all levels of communicating our message - not just to the public, but also to K2 Veterans and their families.

Here are just a couple of the positions that we are looking to fill:

Website/Blog Manager: Do you know how to use WordPress and would love to keep our website and our blog up to date with the newest information?

Email Marketer:  Do you love email - but hate spam? Would you love to see timely updates going to our supporters? All you need is some knowledge of MailChimp or a willingness to learn.

Social Media Manager: If you see Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as a tool that can spread the word about our cause - including engaging our current community and growing it further - then we are looking for you. This also includes managing our new community engagement platform that will come online this year.

Graphic Designer: If you are a wiz at Photoshop, Illustrator, and other design software we can use your help. This position also needs to have an understanding of how print marketing works and what you need to do for pre-production of both print and digital production.

Outreach Coordinator: This person works with the MarComms team and the Outreach team to develop presentations and booth/exhibition activities.

Podcaster - We'd love to do a weekly podcast where we talk about K2 and everything that is going on - in detail. If you are dying to do a weekly talk show with K2 as the main focus, then our podcast team needs your help.

Advocacy Team

The nonprofit advocacy team promotes our mission, fighting every day to convince organizations and governmental bodies to implement partnerships and policies that will help K2 Veterans. As the name suggests, a big part of this role involves advocating for our veterans, but on a grand scale.

You must demonstrate a commitment to the cause either through previous experiences or activities related to our mission. We advocate for our veterans by building and maintaining relationships in both the public and private sectors.

Governmental Affairs - working directly with lawmakers and their staff, government agencies, and government contractors; these team members work to make sure that K2 Veterans receive care,  recognition, and treatment from their elected representatives.

Direct Advocacy - working with lawyers, Veterans Service Organizations, and other partners these team members help K2 Veterans with their individual cases. These team members work closely with the Care and Support Team to achieve results on a case-by-case basis.

Strategic Partnerships - working to build partnerships with other organizations helps strengthen the ability for SFF to provide services to K2 Veterans. By developing solid partnerships with established nonprofit organizations we can expand services without increasing costs.

Research - Learning more about Karsh-Khanabad, Uzbekistan, environmental conditions, governmental knowledge, and much more has always been the first step to getting more done for K2 Veterans. By leveraging this knowledge, we can advocate at all levels to affect the lives of K2 Veterans.

Board of Directors | Board of Advisors

Board members are the guardians who steer our organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies. Our board makes sure that our programs have adequate resources to advance our mission.

The Board of Directors is involved more intimately with the day-to-day operation of the organization. They are the leaders who advocate directly for our mission by making sure that the volunteer staff is using our funding wisely. They make decisions based on the best interest of the nonprofit corporation and the veterans that we represent. Finally, they make sure that we are not only following our bylaws but that we comply with our purpose and mission.

The Board of Advisors is an informal group of experts and advisors that have been hand-picked by our Board of Directors and our Executive Team. Our Advisory Board grows and shrinks as needed depending on our current needs. Our organization is always looking for subject matter experts who are willing to act as Advisors to our mission.
